Working as an Electrician Across Ontario and Quebec

Living in the Ottawa–Gatineau region offers electricians a unique advantage: Electricians in this region can potentially access opportunities in two provinces instead of one.

Many electricians explore opportunities to work on construction projects on both sides of the river, expanding their career options and potential income.

Unique Opportunity in the Ottawa–Gatineau Region

Electricians living in Ottawa may choose to explore certifications and pathways that allow them to participate in construction projects in Quebec.

This can open access to large construction projects and additional job opportunities in the Gatineau area.

Electricians based in Gatineau may also explore opportunities related to the Ontario skilled trades system.

Ontario’s skilled trades framework, managed by Skilled Trades Ontario, regulates certification and licensing for many electrical trades in the province.

Understanding how these systems work can help electricians plan their career paths more effectively.

Ontario Trade Certificate Recognition

Electricians who already hold a valid Canadian trade certificate from another province may be eligible to have their credentials recognized in Ontario.

Under the Ontario labour mobility framework, tradespeople with recognized certifications can apply for a Certificate of Qualification verification through Skilled Trades Ontario.

To qualify for this process, applicants must hold a valid trade credential that meets the legal definition of an authorizing certificate under the Ontario Labour Mobility Act.

If the certification matches an equivalent designated trade in Ontario and there are no significant differences in scope of practice, applicants may be able to obtain an Ontario Certificate of Qualification without additional training or examinations.

Ontario recognizes:

  • 51 Red Seal trades

  • 21 additional trades with equivalent trade matches across Canadian provinces

Once the credential is verified, qualified applicants may receive their Ontario Certificate of Qualification through Skilled Trades Ontario.

For the most accurate and updated information, applicants should consult the official guidelines provided by Skilled Trades Ontario.
